3 Years Later, How are Prices Holding Up for the Mongoose x Stranger Things Max Mayfield Bmx?

The Stranger Things x Mongoose BMX bike came out in 2019. It had a retail price of $220 and was sold at Target.

The bike was inspired by Max Mayfield’s bike on the show and was marketed as a special edition rather than a limited edition with an unknown quantity produced.

I missed this bike being sold in stores and kinda regret it. I’m not a huge fan of the yellow on chrome color scheme. But I still want one.

I wonder how many of them ended up being used. After all, Stranger Things is an adult show with kids in it, it’s not a kids show. But hopefully there are some teenagers out there shredding in these bikes and they’re not all sitting in cardboard boxes to be resold.

But for those who bought for resale purposes or people who are looking to buy one now. What is the current pricing looking like 3 years later?

A search on eBay shows 21 bikes currently listed (all data as of November 12, 2022). But after filtering out current auctions and bikes that are pick-up only, there are only 14 bikes.

There are 3 used bikes for sale with a price range from $562 to $2,663. These prices are with shipping included. 

There are 11 new bikes for sale with a price range from $599 (assembled) to $2,500 (new in box). Prices are with shipping included.

Switching over to recently sold items we see 22 bikes. 

2 of the sales were for used bikes with a price range from $324 to $348. These prices included shipping. That’s an average of $336 for used bikes sold.

20 of these sales were for brand new bikes with a price range from $490 to $900. Prices are with shipping included. The average sales price for a new bike was $590.

One minor caveat, eBay sales data isn’t perfect. Many times things are sold “twice” when the first buyer doesn’t pay. This could skew the data. And when a best offer is accepted, we can’t see what that amount was, so those are excluded in the average calculations.

So 3 years later, it’s clear that these bikes have appreciated in value. Used bikes are selling for 52% over the original list price of $220.

And on average, new bikes are selling for 168% over the original price.

I think it will be some time before we start seeing sales over $1,000. And a very long time before the bikes listed at over $2k sell. As the bikes sell out at $500 and $600, I’d expect to see more listings at $700 to $900 before crossing the 4 digit mark.

That’s a decent return over the past 3 years. We’ll see were it goes from here. Personally, I don’t see these getting any cheaper so it might be the time to buy if you want one.
